Homeschooling Horror

This COVID-19 pandemic has been hard on a lot of us. Some have lost their jobs (myself included) and are stressed over what seems to be a constant anxiety of “when am I going to get my unemployment check?” Some parents have to try and homeschool, while working full-time jobs, which is never an easy task, especially if you have multiple children. In my situation, my son’s dad works full-time and we share custody 50/50; however, because I was laid off I have assumed all the teaching responsibility.
My experience with homeschooling in the beginning was full of promise, I was excited to teach my 6yo. boy math, and english and to have hopefully a positive impact so that he is ready for first grade. Over the past weeks, it has been getting tough and I am wearing down. There are constant complaints of “I’m tired”, “I don’t want to do this” and meltdowns involving tears and tantrums. Can anyone relate? Please tell me I’m not alone!
Today I asked my son to read 2 level C books, which is always the first activity of each day because that’s where we both have enough patience with each other. We didn’t even get to the third word when he’s like “mummmmmyyyyyy, I can’t do this, I’m too tired”. At this point after weeks of homeschooling my child, and him complaining about EVERY task I broke down and cried, and told him that I’m tired too, and I told him that mummy is not perfect, and I’m trying hard, but it makes it harder on mummy when he constantly fights me.
Today after he finished his required tasks, I cut the lessons short, told my son I needed some space, came up to my room and just let go and cried. I cried because of the stress of not having money to pay my bills, over being unemployed, but mainly I cried because homeschooling is a horror. I feel tired, drained and defeated.
I never thought that teaching a 6yo would be so difficult, they have no autonomy, you have to be there with everything, spelling, math, science because they know nothing, and you are their person to make sure that by the time they hit first grade that they know the basics. I have no teaching experience, I wasn’t trained for this so I feel behind the eight ball to begin with, then when my kid tells me that I’m a bad teacher it hits me like a slap in the face.
This is a specialized field in which we have awesome teachers that throughout this whole pandemic I have come to respect more and more. I know the government didn’t have much choice but to close the schools, but I feel like there should be more support systems out there for parents trying to homeschool through this time, some kind of skills training like a class called “how to not grab your first glass of wine at 10am when your child is on their 3rd complaint in 10mins” or a class to teach parents how to deal with difficult kids/situations called “10 easy way on how to not lose your shit”.
To the parents struggling to keep it together, you are not alone! I am here, I feel your pain and know the struggles. Feel free to leave your support, ideas and or feelings, and let’s support each other in this. Please don’t hate though, because we all need positive energy right now!
