STEAK TACOS & MARGARITAS
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic I think the one thing that we are all grateful for is that while we cannot actually go to restaurants – which is all driving us nuts! At least we can carry-out some awesome food, and thanks to Mike Dewine, we can carry out alcohol as well!
My first restaurant I am writing about is Mazunte, I chose this restaurant for no other reason than my friend Linsey told me that they allow carry out of Margarita’s, and quite frankly who doesn’t like a good Margarita, and these are supposed to be one of the best in the city.
THE EXPERIENCE
Along with my date for the night, we ordered the steak tacos (with no red onions), the chicken tacos (with no avocado salsa), the Queso Fundido which comes with chips and of course the margaritas! When we arrived at the restaurant we were greeted by a guy that asked us for our order number, made sure we were at the right location (Mazunte has 3 of them) and he gave us a number and told us to park. We waited for about 5 mins when I server came out with our food. This is quite prompt is you ask me because I’ve waited 30mins for fresh food at McDonalds.
SPECIALTY DRINK
We when got back to my house everything was packaged up nicely and the order was complete. The margaritas came in cute little 12oz bottles, first things first I broke out my blender, the ice and made the traditional frozen drink. I had margarita salt on hand with lemon juice and I rimmed the wine glasses and TA-DA! Margaritas!
While heading into the living room with the food, I, of course, took a sip of the margarita and OMG, it was GOOD! I now know why Mazunte is known for their margaritas. As my mouth hit the rim of the glass, obviously my first taste was the salted rim; however, the margarita itself was a smooth sweetness that engulfed my mouth, and the salt just heightened the taste into a sweet and salty delishishnous (yep! I made up a word, haha!) that was excellent.
THE FOOD
As I was firing up the blender for the margaritas, my date unpacked the bags of food and started heating up the Fundido queso dip. I was surprised because I expected what I always expect with Mexican restaurants is the traditional tortilla chips, not at Mazunte! They packed beautifully crisped to perfection browned tortillas that we ourselves had to break to make the chips. The chips were not greasy or oily so we could eat them without getting our fingers greasy which is always a plus! As an avid fan of queso dip I was excited to try the Fundido queso dip, and it did not disappoint. The dip was beautifully creamy at the first point in which it hits the palette, then there is a touch of spice on the backend which is softened by the creaminess of the cheese. Certainly, one of the best dip/chip combos I have tried at a Mexican restaurant before.
There were three steak tacos about 6” in size that were in my take home container, which to save dishes I ate within the container. Looking back this was probably not the best idea because the juices from the meat and the salsa had made the bottoms of the tacos soggy, and hard to eat. I assume that I wouldn’t have had this problem if I had the ability to dine in at the restaurant. The taste of the Steak Tacos did not disappoint though! The tacos were topped with pico de gallo, salsa roja (red), goat cheese – normally they have pickled onions, but I chose to do without those because I’m not a massive onion fan. The tacos were packed with a good ratio of steak to topping. The steak was well cooked and juicy, the salsa and Pico de Gallo was fresh and tangy. In my opinion, the one ingredient on the tacos that really set them apart from others that I have had before was the added goat cheese. It added a creaminess that paired well with the flavor of the steak and the salsas.
CONCLUSION
The whole experience with Mazunte was a great one, from the service – although limited in this COVID-19 world was good, it seemed organized, the workers took protective measures with gloves and masks, and they got us in and out quickly. The margaritas were incredible, and the food while difficult to eat with the soggy bottoms had incredible tastes and flavors that definitely left a good taste in my mouth (pardon the pun!). I’d love to hit this place up again once the world returns to normal.
